Court allows ED for Lalit Modis transfer from UK

first_imgMumbai, Nov 16 (PTI) A special PMLA court here today allowed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to send a Letter of Request (LR) to the British government for execution of a non-bailable warrant against former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi and his transfer to India for facing probe in a money laundering case. The ED, in its application filed on November 8, prayed the court for issuing LR for the execution of NBW against Modi. The agency sought necessary steps to be taken by the competent authorities in the UK for locating him.The Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court today allowed the prayer.”The LR order will now be sent to the External Affairs Ministry, which will forward it to the competent authority in England for further action,” said special ED counsel Hiten Venegoankar. The agency is probing the case against Lalit Modi in connection with a 2008 deal between World Sports Group (WSG) and Multi Screen Media (MSM) for television rights worth Rs 425 crore for the Indian Premier League. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had registered a case in Chennai in connection with the 2008 deal. This was followed by a case by the ED.So far, three LRs have been issued against Modi by the same court to authorities in Singapore, Mauritius and UAE.The court had issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against the high-profile former IPL boss, believed to be in the UK, on August 6 last year.In 2008, after BCCI awarded IPL media rights for 10 years to WSG for USD 918 million, the WSG entered into a deal with Multi Screen Media to make latters television channel Sony the official broadcaster of IPL.advertisementWhile BCCI alleged irregularities and breach of contract in this deal, ED started a probe in 2009 under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) to investigate allegations that payment of Rs 425 crore towards facilitation fee by MSM- Singapore to WSG Mauritius was made in illegal manner. How Barcelona will line up in 2018-19

first_imgHaving reinforced their squad smartly over the summer, Barcelona will prove a formidable adversary to Real Madrid, Atletico and any other challengers to their La Liga crown. While securing their 25th La Liga title and 30th Copa del Rey were huge positives from a 2017-2018 campaign that saw them go 36 games unbeaten in the league, there was still a sense of lingering disappointment about Ernesto Valverde’s first term at the helm.Indeed, this stemmed from their shattering UEFA Champions League loss against AS Roma in the quarter-finals, where they remarkably blew a 4-1 first leg lead to bow out in a forgettable away leg in the Italian capital. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Man Utd ready to spend big on Sancho and Haaland in January Who is Marcus Thuram? Lilian’s son who is top of the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach Brazil, beware! Messi and Argentina out for revenge after Copa controversy Best player in MLS? Zlatan wasn’t even the best player in LA! So with this in mind, achieving big things in Europe will be a key target of the Catalan giants, as they’ll look to well and truly put last season’s frustrating exit behind them. Now in his second season, expectations are high that Valverde will deliver on all fronts, especially considering the quality he has at his disposal. Anything less than retaining their league title and going deep into the Champions League will be seen as a failure.Goalkeepers Marc Andre ter Stegen BarcelonaMarc-Andre ter Stegen will be Barca’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, the German star now an integral component of the team. Through his astute passing out from the back, his rapid reactions, great awareness, sweeping and competent shot-stopping, he’s the perfect No.1 for Barcelona’s style.Who will serve as his number two is an entirely different and uncertain matter, though, with the highly-rated Jasper Cillessen considering his future despite Valverde’s desire for him to stay. The Dutch international is desperate to receive regular playing time, but this is highly unlikely at Barca where until now he’s had to settle for Copa del Rey action.DefendersSamuel Umtiti BarcelonaBoasting the second best defence in La Liga last season, behind only the typically mean Atletico Madrid, Barca will back themselves to be just as measly this time around. The smart acquisition of former Sevilla centre-back, Clement Lenglet, adds vital quality, depth and ball-playing polish, and he will complement starting duo, Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti, wonderfully. Then in the full-back slots, Jordi Alba will continue as the main man at left-back. His backup from last term, Lucas Digne, has left the club to join Everton.Meanwhile, newly-named joint vice-captain Sergi Roberto and Nelson Semedo will do battle for the starting right-back spot.MidfieldersArturo VidalAlready spoilt for choice in this area of the pitch prior to club legend Andres Iniesta and Paulinho leaving, the captures of Arthur and Arturo Vidal this summer ensures Valverde will have vast options to choose from in midfield. The former has been described by some as a potential heir to another club legend, Xavi, for the way that he plays the game, while the Chilean has been one of the best midfielders of his generation but has suffered from injury issues in recent years.Midfield director Sergio Busquets is set to resume his holding role for another season, but it will be fascinating to see who gets the nod for the more advanced midfield roles ahead of him. With Ivan Rakitic probably locked in for one of these posts, the battle will be on between Philippe Coutinho, Rafinha, Denis Suarez, plus the aforementioned Arthur and Vidal. Valverde is expected to mostly go with a 4-3-3 formation this time around, so competition will certainly be fierce to nail down a starting berth in the middle of the park.AttackersLionel Messi Barcelona Real Madrid 060518Led by the irrepressible Lionel Messi, who continues to prove age is no barrier for him, much will yet again be expected of Barcelona’s fearsome frontline. Although bettering their league-leading 99 La Liga goals from last term will be tough, there’s no reason to suggest they won’t go close. After a challenging, injury-ravaged first year at the Camp Nou, Ousmane Dembele will be raring to go and full of confidence after his World Cup triumph with France. He will also be buoyed by a brilliant goal in the Spanish Super Cup win over Sevilla.Alongside Messi and Dembele, Luis Suarez will lead the line. In light of some noticeable decline over the last year or so, it will be very interesting to see how the dogged Uruguayan fares as he looks to recapture his best form.If any of the three men above are unavailable for whatever reason, the likes of Rafinha, Denis Suarez and exciting new signing Malcom will give them plenty of impetus in wide areas. Coutinho could also be an option in a more advanced role if required.Meanwhile, Paco Alcacer or the talented Munir El Haddadi can fill in for Suarez if they don’t depart before the transfer window closes.ManagerErnesto Valverde Barcelona unveilingFollowing a positive first campaign in Catalunya, where he laid some strong foundations in terms of his demands and philosophy, Valverde will attempt to kick things up a gear in the 2018-2019 season.Even though he has been criticised for his conservative football and reluctance to rotate, he enjoys the backing of president Josep Maria Bartomeu and has been able to bolster his squad with some fine purchases. As winners of seven of the last 10 La Liga championships, Barcelona’s chief focus will be on retaining their title while enjoying a far better run in Europe. The pressure will be on, but the well-organised and tactically proficient Spaniard has proven his quality so far during his time his charge, so it’s understandable why he is seen as the right man to take the club forward. How Barcelona could line upBlessed with so many options all over the pitch, particularly in midfield, Valverde has no shortage of talent at his disposal. With the World Cup delaying the return of many of his stars in pre-season, having such enviable depth will be a real luxury as everyone gets back up to speed.Depending on the opposition and the importance of the match, there’s a plethora of combinations the manager can deploy. Last season, Valverde was sometime criticised for using a 4-4-2 system with little width but he is expected to be more offensive this term and utilise the 4-3-3 below much more. Valverde could also decide to use a 4-2-3-1 with Busquets and Rakitic in a double pivot, Messi as the No.10 and Coutinho and Dembele as the wingers supplying Suarez. An especially fascinating battle looks set to unfold for the right-back berth, with hardly anything separating Sergi Roberto and Semedo. Equally captivating will be the battle for midfield places, as all of the options will fancy their chances of earning a regular starting spot. Arthur’s strong preseason, in particular, will give Valverde a nice selection headache.Barcelona 2018-19last_img read more

Snubbed Usman Khawaja not pinning hopes on Ashes recall

first_imgHaving been pulled out of Australia’s one-day team to prepare for India, then ignored by selectors for every match in the subcontinent, batsman Usman Khawaja is guarded about his chances of winning a Test recall for the Ashes. The stylish number three suffered a further blow on Thursday when he was left out of Australia’s one-day squad for next month’s Champions Trophy in England and Wales.Being excluded from the nation’s formidable one-day team is nothing to be ashamed about given the batting riches at selectors’ disposal. However, the India snub was a bitter pill to swallow for a player who had averaged 66.75 in the preceding Test series against Pakistan after topping the runs list in a losing cause against South Africa.Rubbing salt into the wounds, Khawaja was left to carry the drinks during the four-test series in India and watch his replacement Shaun Marsh manage only 151 runs at an average of 18.87 from his eight innings.”The most frustrating thing for me was not to play those three ODIs in New Zealand,” Khawaja told Fox Sports (www.foxsports.com.au).”I got pulled out of that series to prepare for India and then not playing was a bit hard.”The plain-spoken Khawaja has had a frosty relationship with selectors in the past.As Australia lurched to an emphatic defeat in Sri Lanka last year, he was axed, somewhat harshly, for the third and final Test along with opener Joe Burns. He made his displeasure with selectors clear.Still stinging from the omission, Khawaja told local media he and Burns were “scapegoats” for the team’s wider failures, an indiscretion that earned him a quiet “chat” with coach Darren Lehmann.advertisementFormer players and media pundits have repeatedly accused Australia’s selectors of being poor communicators and particularly ham-fisted in their handling of dropped players. But Khawaja said there were no hard feelings from his India disappointment, with Lehmann having gone out of his way to let him down easily.”To Boof’s credit I had a chat to him about all that stuff and he came up to me and he actually knew where I was at in that things had not worked out,” said the Pakistan-born 30-year-old.Khawaja is likely to be restored to Australia’s top order for the Ashes, given the left-hander’s fine record on home pitches over the past two seasons. But he has learnt not to look too far ahead.”It is the pinnacle of cricket when you represent Australia – playing against the old enemy,” he said.”But to be frank it is still far away and a lot can happen between now and the Ashes.”last_img read more

ICC Champions Trophy: Bhuvaneshwar Kumar baffled by lack of swing in England

first_imgIt is inexplicable when a white ball refuses to offer swing for seamers in English conditions and Bhuvneshwar Kumar has altered his strategy after failing to understand why this is happening during the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy here.Bhuvneshwar has bowled 22.3 overs across three games taking four wickets for 100 runs at a very decent economy rate of 4.44, given the field restrictions in Powerplays are loaded heavily in favour of batsmen.”It’s very difficult to point out why the ball is not swinging in England. The wickets are not generally this hard in England during this time of the year. During the Champions Trophy in 2013 and the next year during Test series, wickets were soft.”Not very soft that batsmen would encounter problems but soft enough for some deviation,” Bhuvneshwar told mediapersons at the mixed zone after India reached the semi-finals.India’s leading seamer is, however, baffled and failed to pinpoint whether it is the quality of white kookaburra to be blamed.”I don’t know whether that’s the reason or something to do with the quality of the balls, but as everyone is watching that it’s difficult for the bowlers to get swing.”Swing bowlers normally have to pitch it up in order to either move the ball away or into the batsman but Bhuvneshwar decided to hold the length back a little in order to stifle runs. Something he successfully did against South African duo of Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla during their 76-run opening stand.”When the ball doesn’t swing then you have to alter the length. You have to bowl a bit back of the length. Normally, we bowl fuller lengths to get wickets but here we are holding the length back.advertisement”The par score is 300 and the main aim is to take wickets and if, then build up adequate pressure so that we can get wickets later to restrict them to a small total,” Bhuvneshwar explained. But doesn’t a bowler feel helpless when there is nothing to look forward to and that too in England, a dream destination for bowlers.”In these circumstances, the idea is not to bowl at their strengths. Look, they will still find ways to score but idea was to keep it at bare minimum. I feel the pressure that we created in the first 15 overs helped us get wickets later on, not to forget the three brilliant run-outs,” he added.According to Bhuvneshwar, one of the main factors that worked during the South Africa match was the 40 runs that they saved in the second Powerplay, thereby increasing the pressure on the opponents.”When (Quinton) De Kock and (Hashim) Amla were batting, we knew that their strategy was to not lose too many wickets till the 30th over, before going for the kill. But our plan was to ensure that we build pressure with dot balls.”The 40 runs that we saved during the second Powerplay helped. If you are only 130 at the end of 30th over, you are mentally under pressure,” he said.last_img read more

Cricket Australia says no deal with players in pay dispute

first_imgThe Australian cricket board confirmed on Friday there would be no eleventh hour breakthrough in a bitter pay dispute with the players’ union, leaving more than 200 leading cricketers uncontracted and the fate of future tournaments in limbo.Cricket Australia said the union had refused to negotiate, leaving no chance for a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) to be struck before the midnight deadline on Friday.”Cricket Australia (CA) today acknowledged that a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will not be agreed before 1 July and repeated its call for the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) to come to the negotiating table and show genuine flexibility in the best interests of the players and the game,” the board said in a statement.”Over the past months, CA has repeatedly sought to engage with the ACA in a genuine dialogue and to commence a proper negotiation process.”It is regrettable that these efforts have been rebuffed, resulting in the current situation which CA recognises is not in the interests of either the players or the game.”The ACA has blamed CA’s insistence on altering a 20-year-old revenue-share model for the breakdown in talks and has refused to deal with the board’s lead negotiator. The ACA called on CA CEO James Sutherland to come to the negotiating table this week but the long-serving executive has kept silent since he emailed players in May, informing them they would be “unemployed” if they failed to agree to a new MoU by the June 30 deadline.CA improved its offer to players last week, promising more cricketers a share in profits, but the union, which is refusing to budge from its demand for a share of overall revenues, quickly rejected it.advertisementCA has said the revenue-share model is unfit for modern times and is starving funding of grass-roots cricket, while players say it has underpinned the game’s growth and prosperity over the past 20 years.About 230 players would be uncontracted by Saturday but around 70 would still be tethered to state contracts, local media have reported, and would be expected to train and play. The lockout could potentially scupper next month’s Australia A tour to South Africa, which includes a number of prominent Test players, including batsmen Usman Khawaja and Glenn Maxwell. An ACA spokesman said on Friday that players would meet on Sunday to decide the road ahead, including whether they might boycott the tour of South Africa which starts with a four-day match on July 12.Further tournaments, including a two-test tour of Bangladesh, and a one-day international series in India, also remain in doubt.last_img read more

New Team India coach Ravi Shastri: The man of many World Cups

first_img“…and Dhoni finishes it off in style. A magnificent strike into the crowd. India lift the World Cup after 28 years and its been an Indian captain who’s been magnificent on the night…”Indians all over the country will recognise these words, and the voice that has come to be associated with that moment MS Dhoni launched Nuwan Kulasekara into the Wankhede stands for India to win the 2011 World Cup.That is how most cricket lovers now would know Ravi Shastri, as a commentator.Testament to that would be the fact his was again the voice to call the winning moment in MS Dhoni’s other World Cup win back in 2007.”…in the air…and Sreesanth takes it. India win…”His tryst with the Indian team and World Cups didn’t come to an end there. In 2014, he was appointed the director of Indian Cricket team for a period of two years from India’s tour of England till the World T20 2016.Shastri had a good run as India won an ODI series against England, reached the semi-finals of the 2015 World Cup and 2016 World T20, won a T20I series in Australia and clinched the Asia Cup.But what about Shastri the player, little memory of which has lasted in the psyche of the nation given his commentating days.He made his Test debut in the first Test against New Zealand back in February 1981. He started his career as a specialist left-arm orthodox bowler batting at number 10 and by the time he was playing his last Test in December 1993 against South Africa, he had metamorphosed into an opening batsman while occasionally rolling his arm over.advertisementIn between playing a total of 80 Tests, he had amassed 3830 with the highest score of 206 which came against Australia.Signs of future leader can be traced back to his first success as captain, which came leading his school, Don Bosco High School (Matunga), to their first ever Giles Shield in 1977. The fact that the previous year he had lost the final as a player makes the win even more justifying in proving his mettle as a leader. And when he finally made his debut for the Bombay Ranji team, he was the youngest ever.He had established himself as a dependable opener by the time the 1983 World Cup came around. He partnered Krishnamachari Srikkanth, as Sunil Gavaskar was coming to the end of his playing days. He lifted India’s first World Cup trophy even though he didn’t get to play in the final. His next big success came in 1985 in ‘The Champion of Champions’ tournament. Shastri scored 182 runs and took 8 wickets, for which was he awarded the man of the series and won an Audi 100 car for his efforts. His stint with the English county side Glamorgan could do little to help his fledgling career at the time. He had become a notoriously slow batsman, slowing down dramatically while batting in the forties and nineties. As Kapil Dev’s reign as captain of the team started to wane, Dilip Vengsarkar had become one of the best batsmen in the side and was naturally seen as the replacement for captaincy.’Shastri eventually retired from international cricket in 1992 with 3108 runs and 129 wickets in 150 ODIs and 3830 runs and 151 wickets in 80 Test matches.last_img read more

Pep Guardiola left frustrated after Manchester City’s missed chances

first_imgIt was a familiar tale for Manchester City — waves of attacks, relentless pressure but missed chances meant Pep Guardiola’s side needed an 82nd minute equaliser from Raheem Sterling to earn a 1-1 draw at home to Everton. In City’s defence, they had to play the entire second half with 10 men after full-back Kyle Walker was shown a red card on the stroke of halftime. But while pleased with the spirit his team showed, City’s Spanish coach could not disguise his frustration with his side’s failure to convert their chances.”The second half we made a good performance, similar like last season when we played them here. We created the chances in the first half but we did not finish them,” said Guardiola.”We created chances, before their goal, three or four… our amount of opportunities on target or close to target was good, we were there all the time but we never gave up.”All you can do is try to create the chances. Maybe one day it will change. I think last season we were the team who made the most chances,” added the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach.Everton manager Ronald Koeman said despite the disappointment of conceding a late equaliser he was pleased with a point from a difficult trip.”When you play at City it is always tough, how they play, how they try to play but I think the gameplan was perfect, we had a good defensive organisation… it was really tough, we had good man-marking. (Also Read: Wayne Rooney joins the 200 club and shows he isn’t done yet)advertisement”But with the quality they have they will always create chances and you need to be a little bit lucky,” he said. That luck perhaps came with the red card for Walker but Everton faced relentless pressure from a City team down a man.”We scored the goal, of course I am disappointed now to be one-nil up, 11 against 10, but I think we did wrong thing in the second half, we played too much long ball,” said the Dutchman.”It is a good point. I am happy, we worked hard for that point.”last_img read more

Dont beg for Bharat Ratna for Dhyan Chand: Bansal

first_imgNew Delhi, Aug 27 (PTI) There is no need to beg for Bharat Ratna for hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand and we are only belittling his achievements by making such demands, former India hockey coach A K Bansal said today. Iconic cricketer Sachin Tendulkar had become countrys first sports person to receive Bharat Ratna in 2014 while many believed Dhyan Chand deserved to be the first recipient of the highest civilian honour. Recently, the Sports Ministry had written to the Prime Ministers office, requesting that Bharat Ratna be bestowed upon the highly revered hockey legend. “Why are we begging for award for Dadda (Dhyan Chand). He should have been the first to get it. Whether he gets it or not, the cult of Dhyan Chand will remain forever,” Bansal said while speaking during a panel discussion on significance of National Sports Day. The discussion, in which former Dronacharya and Arjuna awardees participated, was organised by Delhi Sports Journalist Association (DSJA) and Physical Education Foundation of India. “We are belittling what he has done for the sport by again and again asking for this honour for him but I think, the chorus will continue until he gets it,” Bansal, a recipient of Dronacharya in 2010, said. Bansal rued that level of hockey has gone down when compared to Indias golden past but appreciated the progress made by other sports in the country. Olympian and firebrand boxer Akhil Kumar said efforts should be made to develop a sports culture and the responsibility lies with the parents and teachers. “What National Sports Day means? It means that people should be aware about fitness. It was always about physical fitness and gradually it became competitive,” Kumar, a recipient of Arjuna awardee in 2005, said. “The coaches and physical education teachers have to be trained. Along with the athletes, the coaches also should be assessed and non-performing coaches should be removed.” Akhil, who is a national observer for boxing along with Mary Kom, said he does not believe in the concept of employing sports psychologists. “I dont trust the psychologists. I would trust myself. When you enter the ring all the psychology remains outside the ring. The one who cant trust his own abilities what will he do?,” he said in his inimitable style. Judo coach Yashpal Singh said sports persons who have achieved something at the highest level must give back to sport. He also urged the government to allow sports persons, working in many government departments, to spend more time in working at grassroots level. Seniors Sports journalists also spoke on the occasion and stressed that coverage of local sports was much required. They rued that much importance was given to European football by media houses these days instead of local sports. PTI AT ATK ATKadvertisementlast_img read more

Tendulkar to PM: Include intl medallists in CGHS scheme

first_imgBy Kushan Sarkar New Delhi, Dec 11 (PTI) Legendary Sachin Tendulkar has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting him to include all international medallists in Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS). Talking about the plight that elite sportspersons go through when facing health issues, Tendulkar in his letter cited the example of Hockey Olympic gold medallist Mohammed Shahids last days. “I am writing to you as a concerned sportsperson on behalf of all the sportsperson in our country requesting your kind intervention for inclusion of all sportsperson who have won medals internationally in the list of sportsperson eligible for CGHS facilities,” Tendulkar wrote to Modi on October 24, a copy of which is in possession of PTI. CGHS is availed by all Central Government employees who have access to medical centres which is associated with this scheme. Tendulkar, in his letter to PM Modi, informed him that he had earlier taken up the issue with both sports ministry and health ministry. “They (Health Ministry) were supportive of the idea but shared their inability to consider wider range of sportsperson under CGHS scheme through their reply dated September 14. I completely appreciate and understand their position basis our original request,” Tendulkar wrote. Tendulkar has requested PM to at least consider inclusion of international medallists (non Govt employees) on a “pilot/test, whose cost benefits can be assessed by the sports ministry. “Once we analyse the cost/benefits the same can be extended to additional categories of sportspersons in a phased manner, after value of Pilot Programme is assessed by Health Ministry,” the maestro wrote. Tendulkar spoke about late Shahid, who got help only during his last days. Shahid passed away due to liver related problem. “Not all sportspersons have been historically allocated government jobs, hence even if limited pool of international medal winners are considered, we can prevent incidents of apathy such as Shri Mohammed Shahid, one of our greatest hockey players,” he further wrote. As a parting shot, Tendulkar wrote: “I have been through several tough injuries where I have felt the pressure of an uncertain comeback. The amount of physical and mental stress that sportsperson goes through is immense. “The medical cost creates additional burden on athletes, which in turn acts as a deterrent.” PTI KHS BS BSadvertisementlast_img read more
