Tainted athletes await decision on Asiad

first_imgThe three dope-tainted wrestlers will be waiting with bated breaths to know their fate which is likely to be announced on Thursday and will decide their participation in next month’s Asian Games. Eleven sportspersons, including six wrestlers, were tested positive for methylhexaneamine, a banned stimulant, during the dope tests conducted ahead of the Commonwealth Games.Provisional suspensions on all of them were lifted after the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) reclassified the stimulant as a ‘specified substance’. The athletes have so far appeared twice before the antidoping disciplinary panel headed by Dinesh Dayal but no decision has been reached so far.It was only in the last hearing in September that the panel concluded that the tests, which were done on the wrestlers, were incompetition and therefore their cases will continue with other accused athletes. After that, RK Anand, the counsel for all the athletes, had sought more time to prepare the case and the three-member panel agreed to his request. The list of 11 sportspersons includes six wrestlers, three swimmers, two athletes and a weightlifter. Among the six wrestlers, Arjuna awardee Rajiv Tomar, Mausam Khatri and Gursharanpreet Kaur were on Tuesday named in India’s Asiad squad but if any sanction is imposed upon them by the threemember disciplinary panel, they will be dropped from the team. The swimming and athletics federations included the athletes in the final squad for the Commonwealth Games despite a case pending against them with the NADA panel. Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) however, chose to be on a safer side and did not pick any of the four wrestlers who were originally part of the CWG team.advertisementBut their stand has changed as well and WFI president GS Mander is confident that all the athletes will be let off with warnings. “Things have changed now and we are sure that they (wrestlers) will get away with a warning,” Mander said. However, Tomar, for whom it was a heart break to miss out a place in the Commonwealth Games, is optimistic about the outcome.”It was very disappointing to miss out on a place at the Commonwealth Games for which I had prepared so well,” Tomar told MAIL TODAY.”I have spoken to our counsel and he is very confident. Hopefully, we all will come out clear tomorrow,” he added. But there is also a possibility that the case may not be decided on Thursday as well and could well go for another hearing. The documents that Anand is likely to come up with would be cross examined and argued upon by the NADA counsel and could take time.last_img read more

Refurbished Santa Cruz Fire Station Re-Opens

first_imgThe 32 fire personnel attached to the Santa Cruz Fire Station in St. Elizabeth are now serving the public from more comfortable and modern facilities. The fire station was recently refurbished at a cost of $14.7 million, through funding provided by the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development, with contributions from other public and private sources. Addressing the re-dedication ceremony for the building on Thursday, Acting Deputy Superintendent in charge of the fire station, Andrew Russell, informed that the upgrading, which started in January of this year, was carried out within budget. He said the scope of the project included demolition and removal of the existing timber roof, windows and doors; construction of new officers dormitory; expansion of existing kitchen space; building of reinforced concrete slab roof; repainting of the station building; complete rewiring of electrical network; and installation of new floor tiles, windows and doors, and plumbing fixtures. He said the work done was “the culmination of an important and eagerly awaited project, which will enrich the lives of the firefighters based there, boost their morale, enhance the delivery of service to the wider community and add value to the Jamaica Fire Brigade’s assets”. Minister of State for Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Colin Fagan, in his address at the ceremony, said it is appropriate that the refurbished facility is being opened during Local Government Month. He congratulated the firefighters for taking the initiative to start some of the work themselves, which he said, served as an inspiration for other  stakeholders to support the project. “While funding was largely provided by the Ministry, through the St. Elizabeth Parish Council, I must acknowledge the input of those who partnered with us.  This kind of partnership is a practical demonstration of our theme for Local Government and Community Development Month – Local Government on a mission together: Building better communities, he said. He gave a commitment that the Ministry “will do everything” to see to the completion of other necessary elements, such as security and landscaping, and urged the firefighters to take care of the facility.last_img read more

Ministry Welcomes New Pipes to Reduce Water Loss

first_imgMinister of Water, Land, Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Robert Pickersgill, has welcomed the entry of new pipes into the market, which will provide the National Water Commission (NWC), and other agencies with a wider array of ways to reduce losses from non-revenue water. The Minister was speaking on Thursday, May 30, at the launch and exhibition of eZeeflow PPR HDPE Pipes and Fittings, a collaboration of Patrick Commodities Limited, and Gobal Hardware Inc, at the Spanish Court Hotel in Kingston.Pointing out that some 65 per cent of the water produced and distributed by the NWC is non-revenue, due to illegal connections, leakage, and commercial losses, Mr. Pickersgill said a part of stopping this “haemorrhaging, is a pipe network which is hardy, resistant, and long-lasting.”“I am not in a position to endorse any one product…but I welcome the choices available to our water agencies, particularly the NWC, which is seeking to upgrade and expand its infrastructure this financial year, at a cost of approximately $10 billion,” he told the gathering.Mr. Pickersgill said the expansion and diversification of the market for pipes was necessary, due to the country’s aging water infrastructure.“I am advised that the new pipes being introduced represent a revolutionary new technology that holds the promise of bringing more alternative choices for the water sector as well as the water infrastructure network, which is so critical to the delivery of potable water and sewerage services throughout the island,” he said. The Minister informed that investigations are being done, and measures being implemented to improve distribution, and reduce non-revenue water.“In the future, this will include the implementation of a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Integrated Water Management System (SCADA/IWMS), which will improve NWC’s operations and maintenance capacity,” he explained. He noted that the deterioration of water and sewerage systems and non-revenue water is set against the background of increasing demands in water deficient areas. However, the Minister stressed that Government is addressing these issues, and will continue to strive to meet the growing needs of rural and urban populations, by continuing to improve and expand these water and sewerage infrastructure to increase access to potable water from 73 per cent to 85 per cent by 2017.Pipes, he said, are a crucial element of improving the infrastructure network, to meet this target.Poly Propylene Random Co-Polymer (PPR) is considered ‘food grade,’ lead free material, which can be used in major water distribution networks. These are used in a thermal fusion socket welding technique, which is cost effective, and fully leakage proof.Contact: Alphea Saunderslast_img read more
