Bringing some relief to the parched Marathwada region, eight sluice gates of the Jayakwadi dam have been opened to discharge water thanks to heavy rain in north Maharashtra. The current discharge of around 4,500 cusecs from the dam has been prompted due to incessant showers in Nashik district and other parts of north Maharashtra, causing the Godavari river to swell and fill up the dams there. The release of water from these upstream dams has in turn led to the accumulation of more than 2 lakh cusecs in Jayakwadi’s Nath Sagar reservoir.Authorities said the discharge from Jayakwadi was prompted after the dam filled up to 92% of its live storage capacity. At the same time last year, the dam had barely 28% of its live storage capacity. While Nashik and Nandurbar in the north and Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur and Pune in western Maharashtra have been reeling under the onslaught of excess rain, the eight districts of Marathwada continue to remain arid despite two months of the monsoon season drawing to a close.Jayakwadi dam is the chief water source for industries in Marathwada, mainly in Aurangabad. The water discharge is expected to benefit areas in at least four districts in the region — Aurangabad, Beed, Jalna and Parbhani — and help resolve the water situation in talukas near the Godavari river bank. This is the first time in two years that the dam’s storage capacity has exceeded 90%.Till Thursday, authorities were releasing 1,200 cusecs of water from the Paithan left bank canal, 900 cusecs from the right bank canal, and 1,589 cusecs from the hydropower project towards the Apegaon and Hiradpuri barrages. The eight districts of Marathwada have collectively received over 75% of the average rainfall till now, with the region as a whole facing a rainfall deficit of more than 20%. Acute potable water scarcity still prevails in several villages, which continue to be supplied by tankers.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government has reportedly decided to increase train passenger and freight fares in the wake of the cash-strapped Indian Railways struggling to raise its revenue. However, the government is yet to decide on the “timing” of implementation of the hike in fares. The Railways will face additional financial burden of Rs 32,000 crore in the next fiscal year as it has to implement the employee salary hikes recommended by the seventh pay panel, even as the department finds it difficult to reach annual revenue target.”(The) rail coffers are virtually empty. A decision on hiking fares has been taken though railways minister Suresh Prabhu remains undecided on the timing and manner of the announcement,” sources familiar with the matter told the Hindustan Times. The railways freight traffic stayed 7 percent below the target set for the April-December period in the current fiscal year. Passenger bookings were also 5 percent lower than projected.A rise in fares can come directly or indirectly, sources said. The public transporter may hike its services cost if it wants to implement the fare increase indirectly.”The hike will be announced before or after the budget,” the sources told the daily.Increasing fares before or after the budget will help the Railways make more income in the peak travel season, which starts from March.Soon after taking charge in 2014, the NDA government had increased train fares by 14 percent, besides levying the Swachh Bharat cess last year.Last week, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had said that the revenue of Indian Railways would increase by 50 percent over the next five years, as the department is in the process of raising funds from foreign investors. The total income of the Indian Railways went up by 12.16 percent to Rs 1,57,880.5 crore in the last fiscal year ending March 2015, compared to Rs 1,40,761.27 crore in the previous year.

Kolkata: The sale of Baluchari silk has seen a sharp spike in Bengal, after the state government launched the ‘Baluchari’ project a few years ago, aiming to revive the textile which harks back to the colonial times.”In collaboration with the West Bengal State Handloom Weavers’ Cooperation Society (Tantuja), the Directorate of Textiles had launched the Baluchari project, which has been a major success. The sale of this particular kind of silk has increased on a major scale as we roped in weavers from Bishnupur, who blended some old and new designs, keeping in mind the current trend and demands of the consumers,” said Director of Textiles Debasis Ghosh on Wednesday. Also Read – Bose & Gandhi: More similar than apart, says Sugata BoseBaluchari, a quintessential textile of Bengal, which found a home in Bishnupur of Bankura district after its place of origin Baluchar in Murshidabad, had succumbed to the vagaries of nature. Even in Bishnupur, the design, looms, weaving technique and the thread used underwent drastic change with time, leaving the originality of the textile in shambles. In such a scenario, the Baluchari project has aided its grand revival, with the hike in sales figures. Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: MamataGhosh further said: “After the launch of the project, the West Bengal State Handloom Weavers’ Cooperation Society eventually undertook its marketing duties and launched an exclusive showroom in Park Street which specialises in Baluchari silk, among others. The annual turn- over of the showroom has reached crores.” Tantuja procures handloom fabrics from cooperative societies and artisans through 12 procurement centres and two training-cum-production centres. It has 83 sales outlets all over India. Speaking about the initiative taken by the government to help the farmers in cultivation of silk, the extension officer of the directorate of textiles Partho Pratim said: “There are 59 government sericulture farms in Bengal which cultivate superior-quality seeds. These seeds are then given to the farmers at a subsidised rate, who then produce the raw silk. When the raw silk is sold in the market, the farmers earn good revenue. The weavers who buy the raw silk spin it into sarees, shawls and other garments.”
