Altech in African fibre network deal

first_img30 January 2013South Africa’s Allied Technologies (Altech) Group has acquired an 8.6% initial interest worth US$16.5-million in London-headquartered telecommunications company Liquid, with the aim of expanding its networking footprint and creating the largest single fibre network in Africa. The planned network will span South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.“The efficiencies this will create will be considerable and will enable the interconnectivity of the continent in a manner previously unachievable,” Altech said in a statement on Tuesday.Altech specialises in telecommunication, multimedia and information technology convergence.“Enterprises will, in many cases for the first time, be able to obtain point-to-point connectivity between a virtually unprecedented number of African countries.“The network will provide reliable, high-speed, cost-effective connectivity to carriers, mobile operators, internet service providers (ISPs), financial institutions and businesses of all sizes.”The acquisition of a stake in Liquid followed losses in Altech’s East African operations. “The Liquid transaction opens up a positive new chapter for Altech, in partnership with a group with proven expertise in its sector,” said Altech’s chief executive officer, Craig Venter. The deal also means speeding up work on fibre networks in Africa.“Liquid has been building and investing in a high-quality pan-African fibre network for many years, and this deal will accelerate our progress by enlarging our network footprint,” said Liquid’s chief executive officer, Nic Rudnick.“We are a strong and ambitious company and have a long-term investment plan for the region.“The compatibility and complementary nature of Liquid and Altech are important features of this strategic alliance – notably with regard to the use of Altech’s multimedia technologies and products, as we extend our value chain to the retail data markets in Africa,” Rudnick said.SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Solar Decathlon 2011: Team Massachusetts’ 4D Home

first_imgLive at the International Builder’s ShowProject manager Spencer Culhane tells GBA that Team Massachusetts – a collaboration of students and faculty at Massachusetts College of Art and Design and the University of Massachusetts at Lowell – has designed 4D Home to perform to the Passivhaus standard. The stick-frame walls will be insulated to R-56.6 with 4 in. of closed-cell spray foam and 7 in. of blown-in fiberglass. The roof will be framed with 14-in. Nordic prefabricated I-joists and insulated to R-64.4 with 4 in. of spray foam and 10 in. of blown-in fiberglass. Zip System sheathing will be used on the exterior surfaces. The PV array as a source of shade and electric power Rather than mounting photovoltaic panels on the building’s standing-seam metal roof, the team has designed a trellis that raises the 6.7 kW (386 sq. ft.) Sunpower array above the south-facing roof surface, enhancing ventilation under the panels and shading the roof and (with the trellis assembly’s overhang) the front of the building during the warm months. MORE INFORMATION Team Massachusetts Web page DOE Web page for Team Massachusetts Team Massachusetts Facebook page GBA Resource Guide for 2011 Solar Decathlon Culhane points out that the team is using a SunDrum flat-plate solar thermal collector that attaches to the back of the array to both cool the panels and generate hot water. The house is also equipped with a dehumidifier and a heat pump for space heating and cooling. Aside from a Roto Frank skylight that will be mounted near the middle of the north side of the roof, Makrown 88 triple-glazed windows will be used throughout. A test build in Boston The team, about 60 people in all, is set to build its 4D Home this summer in Boston’s Marine Industrial Park, test it for further improvements, and then begin deconstructing the building for transport to the National Mall. Culhane says the thermal envelope will ship in four sections, with the decking, which will be flat-packed, shipped separately. Based on the team’s last cost estimate, the home is currently priced at $260,000. Culhane adds, however, that “we are making design refinements to bring that number down to $250K for the competition.” After the competition, the team plans to sell the home and, as noted in a recent Boston Globe article, is already talking to prospective buyers. One of the key design variables in Team Massachusetts’ Solar Decathlon entry, 4D Home, is the configuration of its interior, which, with the repositioning of two sliding partitions, can be quickly altered to accommodate a variety of situations, from a dinner party attended by several guests to a permanent addition to the family. “The 4D Home is about a home that works in the fourth dimension, which is over time. Our target market is a family of three, preferably with a young child, and the idea is that this house can transform with the family over time and adapt to a family’s changing needs,” Evon Calabrese, an architectural designer from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, told Fine Homebuilding’s Justin Fink at the International Builders’ Show in January. With its gabled roof, 4D Home, at just under 1,000 sq. ft., takes a cue from New England’s traditional rural architecture, but its construction and performance goals are based on thoroughly contemporary precepts of energy efficiency and affordability.last_img read more

Photo: Here’s the No. 1 RB In The 2016 Class, Kareem Walker, Posing With The Heisman Trophy In An Ohio State Jersey

first_imgKareem Walker poses with Heisman Trophy.Kareem Walker is the No. 1 running back in the 2016 and he’s committed to play at Ohio State. You probably don’t remember him committing, Buckeye fans, because he made his pledge during your team’s College Football Playoff National Championship Game. It’s understandable. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound back out of Wayne, New Jersey, is ranked the No. 9 player in the country by 247 Sports’ Composite Rankings. He’s talented enough to become one of the best running backs the Buckeyes have ever had – and they’ve had plenty. Former Ohio State greats Archie Griffin (1974, ’75) and Eddie George (1995) both won the Heisman Trophy during their time in Columbus. Could Walker become the third running back in Ohio State history to win the award (or, possibly, the fourth if Ezekiel Elliot takes it home in 2015)? Here he is posing in a Buckeye uniform with the trophy. Tb #BuckeyeNation #Heisman pic.twitter.com/gqMKyEFW26— AlⓂ️ightyReem (@_KareemWalker) January 19, 2015Ohio State currently has five commitments in the 2016 class – one five-star (Walker) and four four-stars.last_img read more

Ministry Welcomes New Pipes to Reduce Water Loss

first_imgMinister of Water, Land, Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Robert Pickersgill, has welcomed the entry of new pipes into the market, which will provide the National Water Commission (NWC), and other agencies with a wider array of ways to reduce losses from non-revenue water. The Minister was speaking on Thursday, May 30, at the launch and exhibition of eZeeflow PPR HDPE Pipes and Fittings, a collaboration of Patrick Commodities Limited, and Gobal Hardware Inc, at the Spanish Court Hotel in Kingston.Pointing out that some 65 per cent of the water produced and distributed by the NWC is non-revenue, due to illegal connections, leakage, and commercial losses, Mr. Pickersgill said a part of stopping this “haemorrhaging, is a pipe network which is hardy, resistant, and long-lasting.”“I am not in a position to endorse any one product…but I welcome the choices available to our water agencies, particularly the NWC, which is seeking to upgrade and expand its infrastructure this financial year, at a cost of approximately $10 billion,” he told the gathering.Mr. Pickersgill said the expansion and diversification of the market for pipes was necessary, due to the country’s aging water infrastructure.“I am advised that the new pipes being introduced represent a revolutionary new technology that holds the promise of bringing more alternative choices for the water sector as well as the water infrastructure network, which is so critical to the delivery of potable water and sewerage services throughout the island,” he said. The Minister informed that investigations are being done, and measures being implemented to improve distribution, and reduce non-revenue water.“In the future, this will include the implementation of a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Integrated Water Management System (SCADA/IWMS), which will improve NWC’s operations and maintenance capacity,” he explained. He noted that the deterioration of water and sewerage systems and non-revenue water is set against the background of increasing demands in water deficient areas. However, the Minister stressed that Government is addressing these issues, and will continue to strive to meet the growing needs of rural and urban populations, by continuing to improve and expand these water and sewerage infrastructure to increase access to potable water from 73 per cent to 85 per cent by 2017.Pipes, he said, are a crucial element of improving the infrastructure network, to meet this target.Poly Propylene Random Co-Polymer (PPR) is considered ‘food grade,’ lead free material, which can be used in major water distribution networks. These are used in a thermal fusion socket welding technique, which is cost effective, and fully leakage proof.Contact: Alphea Saunderslast_img read more
