The 6th annual Disc Jam Music Festival has revealed a tasty lineup with many returning performers and a bevy of new, fresh faces. Featuring a number of heavy hitters from the funk and prog-rock communities including Dopapod (2 nights; 1 set ft. Dopapod Orchestra), Electron, Kung Fu, TAUK, Pink Talking Fish, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Consider The Source (Radiohead set), The Nth Power, Gubbilidis (ft. Zdenek Gubb & Mihali Savoulidis of Twiddle) and Hayley Jane & The Primates, the latest installment of Disc Jam is shaping up to be one of the best yet.Set to take place at Gardner’s Farm this June 9-12, Disc Jam VI will offer attendees new VIP packages that include hotel rooms and shuttles to and from the show; expanded woods camping; all new late night activities including interactive art, fire spinning performances, themed group challenges and an LED foam party. Dead serious.As for Atlanta, Georgia this June 3rd and 4th – our Claus came in the form of Center Stage, Rival Entertainment, and Candler Park Music and Food Festival. Tucked in a green leafy corner of the city’s middle-east side, bands, fans, food, and brews joined in holy matrimony to throw a downright jammin’ time that still leaves echoes ringing through the soul.Bringing together Galactic, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Revivalists, Keller Williams’ Grateful Grass, and more out for the weekend (again… $20 freakin’ dollars!?) – the crowd knew exactly what to expect, and still somehow got more than they bargained for. Kicking off with local ATLiens Blair Crimmons & The Hookers, the gauntlet was thrown down for what was about to ensue over the next two days. Usually, the festival opener brings it up slow, easing the crowd into the night’s festivities. That apparently isn’t Blair Crimmons & The Hookers’ kind of hootenanny.Crimmons and his marauders brought the house down with their tasty brand of southern-edged ragtime that left one hearing rasps of Devil Makes Three and more in the back of their mind. A showman and string-thumping banjo player with a fiery band to back – the stage was immediately set for the weekend. Followed by Keller Williams’s bluegrassy tribute to the Grateful Dead, the acoustic raconteur brought the vibe back down easy street with classics like “Shakedown Street”, “Eyes of the World”, “Candyman”, “Friend of the Devil” (with Allie Kral taking the reigns, kicking ass and taking names), “Scarlet Begonias”, and more. Taking the stage next was New Orleans’ own funkaholics, Galactic, swinging the party on into full bore. If you’ve never seen Galactic, do. Hop on board that righteous jazzy funk train at the next stop you can; they’ll make you think that you were born just so you could catch ‘em once. Taking the stage as only they know how, arms hit the heavens and eyes the stage as the musical melee began. Funk, jazz, hip hop, and more – all blended to create a sonic fire in the purest sense of the words. Thus the boogie ensued and sweat dripped from our collective brow as we settled into the night we hoped would happen. Kicking off the second day of festivities were Webster (Candler Park’s own) and Great Peacock followed by fellow Atlanta locals, King Baby. King Baby brought the energy up early with a rockin’ jam feel and soaring organ that warmed into a midday steamer set that undoubtedly earned them scores of new fans throughout the crowd.Lee Fields & The Expressions came next, bringing back the soul of the 60’s with an R&B spectacular that couldn’t have been more perfectly placed. Following up their set was the one and only Yonder Mountain String Band, bringing their signature blend of bluegrass out to the crowd’s delight.New Orleans stalwarts, The Revivalists, quickly followed – dropping rock ‘n’ roll bombs like only they know how. As David Shaw’s incendiary croon drove over the beat, The Revivalists steamrolled through a fiery set that included old and new classics like “BTBD”, “Monster”, “Stand Up”, “Catching Fireflies”, “Amber”, “Wish I Knew You”, “All In The Family”, and more. Closing out the night was none other than Chris Robinson Brotherhood and their laid back southern-sauced jams. Meandering in and out of tunes reminiscent in more ways than one of the Grateful Dead, Chris Robinson and crew kept the crowd rocking and entranced throughout their entire set.In ways more fitting than words can explain, the Marietta, GA-born musician and crew left the crowd uplifted and ecstatic to end the night’s revelries. All in all, if you’re looking for a quick sum of all parts: Candler Park was a time to remember, plain and simple. Beautiful music, a beautiful city, and beautiful smiling souls to enjoy it with. It felt good. As worldly woes melted in sweet sound, Candler Park Music and Food Festival didn’t disappoint for even a single second. Duran DuranThe children who grew watching episodes of The Muppet Show came of age in the early eighties, so it’s only fitting that the other big nostalgia act of the weekend was one of the biggest pop sensations of the decade, Duran Duran. The years have been kind to both the remaining original members and their catalog of hits. Unlike many of their contemporaries Duran Duran crafted songs of lasting complexity to accompany their insidious hooks and the mixture of sentimentality and rock solid song craft had the Friday Polo Fields stage crowd begging for more when the trip down memory lane concluded. But then, they say it’s always best to leave the crowd “Hungry Like The Wolf.” E-40 and Warren GToward the back of the main stage area were two small-venue domes designated the Heineken House. Various DJs and smaller acts played there over the weekend, but the main attraction came on a tiny makeshift stage outside it for the surprise reunion between the Bay Area’s E-40 and SoCal’s Warren G Saturday evening. Naturally, the massive turnout led to a logistical nightmare, with bottlenecks trapping fans at the back of the crowd and those walking to Radiohead. But the breezy performance was a highlight reel of rap history. Classics like “Super Hyphy,” “Saturday,” and “Tell Me When To Go” were mixed with more recent tracks like Big Sean’s “IDFWU.” Whether it was a Bay Area diehard, a hip-hop historian, or an interested passerby, that packed-in performance was one that everyone involved will never forget. Any music festival that has an offering called “Wine Lands” understands the idea that things get better with age. Outside Lands is the embodiment of that.After nine years, the festival become one of the premier weekends of San Francisco live music calendar, with a developed personality and an eclectic culture that surrounds it. There are after parties and late night shows in every room in the city. From musicians to fans and everything in-between, the late-summer ways of the Bay Area are beaming for those three days in August.This year’s edition on August 5-7 boasted one of the strongest festival line-ups in the country, with trailblazers from every genre and generational heavyweights playing throughout. But, the early sets and up-and-coming acts more than held their own. Outside Lands always helps artists reel in new fans and, like every good festival, rewards the open-minded. Load remaining images LCD SoundsystemThe first moment Outside Lands really came together was when LCD Soundsystem just shut up and played the hits on Friday night. Since reuniting this year after a five-year hiatus, the New York City collective has come back with serious intentions, rocking every single gig like only they can. The energy was palpable as James Murphy showed no signs of decline, maintaining sky-high intensity on “Losing My Edge,” a masterfully built “Get Innocuous!” and the steady ways of “Home.” The sing-along to “New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down” was elevated to “Dance Yrself Clean” and “All My Friends” to close things on a high note. Dr.Teeth & The Electric MayhemIn a weekend full of nostalgic moments, the Dr.Teeth & The Electric Mayhem set stood head and shoulders above the rest, not unlike how the puppets themselves were literally head and shoulders above the deftly skilled puppeteers hidden below the stage. A spell was cast over the audience, bringing cherished childhood memories to life before the misty eyes of children of all ages. With sly nods to the adults in the audience the short set featured a few skits, a few videos, a couple of classic rock covers and literally all the love in the park the true spirit of Jim Henson came alive in the hearts of all within earshot. LettuceBrooklyn based leaders of the future of funk, Lettuce ended a three festival in three day scramble across the country with a blistering set of deep funk and crowd pleasing jams that showed no signs of weariness from time keeper Adam Deitch, Shmeeans or the rest of the boys as the tore through a packed set of funk from the opening of the first notes of “The Force” until the last echoes faded. Though they somehow recovered enough strength to put on a late night show out in the city when Lettuce left the stage in the park they were clearly being held up by the deafening cheers from the astounded crowd. There’s so much happening at once over the course of the three days by the bay during Outside Lands that it is impossible to see it all, and pointless to try. With so many opportunities to be exposed to new sights, sounds and flavors as well as relieving heart warming touch stones of your past the key to getting the most out of Outside Lands it to trust that wherever you are in the bustling festival grounds, you are bound to be surrounded by the magic of creation and love.Check out a full gallery of photos from Outside Lands by our own Rex Thomson below. Big GramsThe collaboration between Big Boi and Phantogram continues to be a favorite addition to festival line-ups throughout the country, and was placed perfectly into the late afternoon on Saturday. With a studio album and a year under their belt, this marriage of hip-hop and electronic music is on full display on “Fell in the Sun” and “Lights On.” And, as they’ve done since their inaugural performance across the Bay Bridge at Treasure Island last year, Big Boi worked in Outkast originals, leading a crowd-pleasing “Ms. Jackson.” Maybe just as important, though, was that Big Grams’ laid the foundation for the uncomfortably crowded pop-up show outside the Heineken House a few hours later. Here were ten of our favorite sets from this year’s event.RadioheadThese titans of experimental alternative put on a powerful performance in the headliner spot Saturday night. After a somber opening with “Burn the Witch” and “Daydreaming,” Radiohead and its faithful went on a journey dominated by some of their most captivating ballads as Thom Yorke conducted every turn. “Pyramid Song,” “Everything In Its Right Place,” and “Nude” were broken apart by more danceable pieces like “Lotus Flower” and “The Gloaming.” Radiohead mixed fan favorites with deep cuts like all the greats can. It was a vastly different experience to those who chose Zedd, which was given an unfortunate slot on the schedule. Those that stuck with Radiohead were given what they wanted, and that was a breathtaking set by one of the best to ever to do it. Kamasi WashingtonRising jazz talent Kamasi Washington continued the unearthly display of skill and improvisation that has made his shows with elements of his band The Next Step and the collective The West Coast Get Down. It’s been a long time since such a deeply instrumental and progressive jazz voice has found such a wide and main stream following, and it stems from Washington’s undeniable brilliance. His ability as a band leader, knowing when to not only let his fellow players shine but to dutifully call out their efforts for praise, made his scene stealing leads all the most impressive for the honest love for the craft behind them. Third Eye BlindA welcome blast from the 1990s, Third Eye Blind turned nostalgic listeners into enthusiastic participants, running through the hits like “Jumper,” “Graduate” and “Never Let Go” as tens of thousands echoed frontman Stephan Jenkins’ vocals. He praised the band’s longtime support from the San Francisco Bay Area, which gave way to one of the highlights of the weekend. The band brought out members of the Magik Magik Orchestra for a portion of the set, including a well-received David Bowie tribute in red Ziggy Stardust wigs.Jack GarrattThe electronic Swiss Army Knife Jack Garratt breathed life and helped welcome the sunshine back into Golden Gate Park Sunday afternoon. The one-man show from the UK had the intimate hills of the Sutro Stage vibing with every beat as he flawlessly turned loops into dense compositions. His humility was met with support when the crowd provided the vocal sample on “The Love You’re Given” and welcomed all of his debuted tracks with open arms. It’s also hard to not win over a crowd when the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme is worked into the set list. His skill for mixing electronic, hip-hop with the structure of an R&B song was as smooth as butter, and turned new listeners into new fans relatively quickly during his 50-minute set. VulfpeckVulfpeck has been skyrocketing in 2016, and led a light-hearted afternoon set at the Panhandle Stage. On day one, the do-it-all foursome showcased their mastery of minimalist funk as each member bounced from one instrument to the next. Theo Katzman kept the audience not only engaged but participating throughout, somehow directing the crowd to sing in three different keys on multiple occasions, including a lively rendition of “Back Pocket.” After everyone got acquainted with an “Outro” opener, Vulfpeck flashed their instrumentation on numbers like “Fugue State” and “Christmas in L.A.” that was properly adapted to “Christmas in The Bay.” A welcome Antwaun Stanley appearance also meant “1612” and “Funky Duck” had their moments to shine.
Twiddle kept the jams flowing at the College Street Music Hall last weekend, hitting the famed New Haven, CT venue for two nights on Friday and Saturday. The band had some fun on night one with members of Dopapod and Kung Fu, and the musical magic continued with a great second showing in Connecticut.Due to an illness, keyboardist Ryan Dempsey was unable to perform, and Josh Dobbs from Cats Under The Stars filled in for the entire night. The show also featured Adrian Tramontano of Kung Fu, who added percussion to the entire performance as well. Twiddle’s core members, Mihali, Zdenek, and Brook Jordan, were only amplified by the new energy on stage, opening with “White Light” and keeping the set rocking throughout.The band also welcomed their fair share of special guests on night two, including Teddy Midnight guitarist Wiley Griffin at points during both sets. The West End Blend Horns also made an appearance, joining in on “Polluted Beauty” and “Lost In The Cold” at the end of set one. Finally, Kung Fu bassist Chris DeAngelis appeared in the show-closing “Latin Tang,” even getting in to a bass battle with Zdenek Gubb. This past August’s LOCKN’ Festival in Arrington, VA was a highlight of the summer of thousands of music fans. Just a week ago, STS9 hit the famed Skyway Theatre in Minneapolis, MN to kick off an extensive fall tour. Joe Russo’s Almost Dead played their two shows in California this weekend at House of Blues in San Diego and the Fox Theater in Oakland. During their Saturday night show, guitarist and songwriter Bob Weir showed up to see for himself what the buzz surrounding the band is all about. Joe Russo, Dave Dreiwitz, Marco Benevento, Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger don’t just play Grateful Dead tunes, they reinvent them in a modern, enhanced way. When you think of Augusta, Georgia in April, one thing naturally comes to mind: The Major Rager concert series! Okay…SOME of you may make mention of some golf tournament happening the same weekend, but whatever. With The Flaming Lips, Moon Taxi and The Eric Krasno Band playing, and for a great cause to boot, the place to be in Augusta that blustery Thursday wasn’t on a putting green…it was front and center at a rocking downtown day-long jam.The charity clearinghouse Friends With Benefits pairs great bands with great causes. The Major Rage uses the opportunity presented by The Masters coming to town to create unique fund raising opportunities. Since their founding, they have raised a quarter of a million dollars for a variety of worthy non-profits.Sunny skies were filled with gusting winds and unseasonably chilly temperatures for the event but music lovers were undeterred. There were plenty of opportunities for craft beer and BBQ but the main course on the menu was served onstage. After a fun warm-up set from Stop Light Observations, one of the hardest working men in the music scene did what he does best…bending his guitar strings until they sang the blues.Eric Krasno BandEric Krasno brought his new band to the Major Rager and wowed the fans with his blues licks and wailing solos! While still getting the funk down with his bands Lettuce and Soulive, Krasno seems to relish the chance to do his own thing. Krasno has gathered a band he seems to trust, including multiple members of the Dap Kings, to form the Erik Krasno Band.Keyboard player and vocalist Deshawn Alexander brought a burst of energy and stage presence with his contributions on the mic and ivories. Vocalist Mary Corso had the crowd in awe of her emotional, bluesy delivery. Krasno got in on the act as well, singing while playing the blues. While his schedule may not allow much time for sleep, with this many amazing bands to play with, Krasno doesn’t have time to rest anyway.Watch Krasno and company pump up the jams below:“Jezebel”“Move Over”People Of The Sun (Moon Taxi)Nashville’s own indie-rockers Moon Taxi have a secret. Though they write artful, melodic rock songs for themselves they secretly kinda wish they were the most bombastic rap rock protest band of all times! So, whenever they can’t fight the urge to go buck wild, they metamorphose into “People Of The Sun” and play tribute to Rage Against The Machine, pioneers of the anger-rock movement of the nineties.Organizers of The Major Rager were more than happy to let them work out their identity issues on stage. Throughout the crowd, fists were raised and middle fingers were unfurled. Classic RATM tunes like “Bulls On Parade” and “Guerilla Radio” were dropped left and right as People Of The Sun quickly moved from hit to hit. Mercurial frontman Wayne Coyne serves as nexus for the swirling mayhem the band has created in the studio and on stages for decades. Whether The Flaming Lips are building a monument to the psychedelic insanity in their hearts, or pleading for love to conquer all, they are always remembering to first and foremost…ENTERTAIN!Flips shows are a senses shattering cacophony of sights and sounds designed to overwhelm onlookers and leave them receptive to new ideas. Wild man Coyne serves as the eye of the storm, urging listeners to embrace love and insanity. Music fans at the Major Rager were lost in a wave of jubilation. Confetti filled the air, Coyne ventured out into the crowd on a giant LED illuminated unicorn, and the general ridiculousness factor needle was buried on eleven.That sense of irreverence has served to connect the band and their fans on a very instinctive level. Humor has a way of disarming a situation. This January, Jam Cruise 15 set sail, with some of the biggest names in live music aboard, collaborating, and throwing down. While Vulfpeck was originally slated to perform on the boat, when a scheduling change forced the band to back out, Vermont’s Twiddle was tagged in. As is the Jam Cruise way, during Twiddle’s set on January 21st, the group invited guitarist Al Schnier from moe. to join the quartet during a rendition of their feel-good number “Mamunes The Faun.”moe. & Members of Turkuaz Perform “Naive Melody” On Jam Cruise [Pro-Shot Video]Across the fourteen-minute rendition, the band moves into a jazzy, laid-back, and spacious jam segment, marking a stark contrast from the upbeat chorus of the song. During this jam, the group almost moves into electronic-inspired sounds carried by Ryan Dempsey behind the keys. After it embarks from Miami, Florida, the cruise will round through Roatan, Honduras, and Grand Cayman during its weeklong circuit.As always, the lineup for the near week-long event is stacked, with Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood topping the bill.
